Product & integration
Does my app need an API key baked in?
No. Public license endpoints accept the customer’s license key as the credential. Your app only pins the public key used to verify signatures.
Does licensing work offline?
Yes. The license token is Ed25519-signed and the client verifies signature, device binding and expiry offline. It checks in again when the token expires.
How many devices per license?
The plan defines it; 3 is the recommended default. Slots are decremented atomically in the database, so retries do not double-count, and customers can release devices in the portal.
Which payment methods are supported?
Stripe is built in: subscriptions, perpetual licenses, trials, refunds, billing portal and expiry reminders. You can also issue keys manually after an offline sale.
Can we self-host?
Yes. A commercial self-hosted license lets you run the Go service and PostgreSQL with Docker Compose. The source is not public.
Must we use UnionUser for updates?
No. Keep your existing OSS/CDN if you prefer. Using the UnionUser feed adds license-gated downloads, yank and per-product signatures.
Which desktop stacks are supported?
Any language that can make HTTPS requests and verify Ed25519 signatures. The first official examples cover Java, JavaScript, Python, Rust and PHP.
Do I need to change my database?
No. License state lives in UnionUser; the client only stores the key and signed token wherever your app already stores settings.
Billing & contracts
How is an active license counted?
A license with an activation, verification or renewal in the last 30 days. Dormant licenses are not billed and are not deleted.
Does the trial need a credit card?
No. The 31-day trial includes the full Pro feature set.
What happens when we exceed the plan?
Service continues. Overage is metered at $10 per 1,000 active licenses per month, with in-app warnings first.
Can we get invoices?
Yes. The Stripe billing portal provides invoices and receipts; annual enterprise contracts can use bank transfer and contract invoicing.
Can we migrate from an in-house system?
Yes. Licenses and customers can be imported in bulk, keeping existing keys or reissuing them. Business and above include migration help.
How is self-hosting priced?
Quoted annually with upgrades and support. Stripe-managed collections are not included; signing and the portal run in your own instance.
Security & compliance
What if a license token is copied?
The token is bound to a device id, so it fails on another machine. Device slots plus online checks limit abuse. Offline mode is a commercial gate and operations tool, not strong DRM.
Where is data stored?
Managed plans store data in UnionUser’s PostgreSQL and object storage; self-hosted runs entirely in your environment. Export is supported.
Can we white-label it?
Enterprise supports branding. Full white-label or closed-source resale also requires a commercial license from Keygate upstream.
Is there an audit log?
Yes. License, device, payment and admin actions are audited; Business and above can export.
